im thankful its fridayno like really thankfulits been a week i am having a hard
I’m thankful it’s Friday. ⠀⠀ No, like REALLY thankful. ⠀⠀ It’s been a week. I am having a hard time articulating it and sorting out in my brain...but I’ll say that life has been such a mix of the sweet and the hard this week. ⠀⠀ Enjoying the fruit of some good, hard work. ⠀⠀ Lingering back pain...thankfully getting better...another trip to the chiro today. ⠀⠀ Heartache over an absolute tragedy that struck a precious family in my small hometown. Lives forever changed. ⠀⠀ An incredible couple of days at the @rightnowmedia conference. Worship, weeping, praying, encouragement, conviction...all over the map, and it was an unexpected range of emotions. ⠀⠀ Parenting has been super hard this week. Dealing with a middle school transition that seems to be hitting hard right now. A teacher that probably needs to just retire. A kid learning how to step into new responsibilities. ⠀⠀ Lots of hard stuff. Lots of tears. And when I’m not in tears, I feel like I’m *right* on the verge. ⠀⠀ So this morning, after school drop off and a quick errand, I took a few minutes to rest. Just REST. Resting at home is a hard thing for me, and I want to embrace it more. The cold weather this morning helps. ⠀⠀ Thankful for weekend vibes.💛

The biggest problem with addictions is that they WORK... for a little while at least. ⁣ 🔹⁣ Let me explain. As humans we don’t like to feel bad. period. I’ve never heard of a person happy about getting a speeding ticket. Or ecstatic about a breakup. I’ve never heard a person say they were over the moon excited about losing their job. ⁣ 🔹⁣ We do our best to either address or shove away any unwanted or negative feelings. We call this “coping”.⁣ 🔹⁣ Ways we cope come in many different forms. If we were to put these coping mechanisms on a scale, we might have something like this:⁣ ⁣ On one end, things like exercise, reading, mindfulness activities, socializing. On the complete opposite end of this scale are things like working too much, avoiding people, substance use, isolation, self-harm.⁣ 🔹⁣ What do all these have in common? They all APPEAR to make us feel better and cope with whatever it is we’re feeling... at least for the moment. ⁣ 🔹⁣ The different being things like exercise or reading are healthy, productive, and will benefit us in the long-run. On the other hand things like overworking ourselves or drinking will only maybe make us feel better temporarily. And worse, they will slowly deteriorate our minds, bodies, and souls. ⁣ 🔹⁣ So what’s so important about this?⁣ ⁣ In Heather Kopp’s book Sober Boots, she says “When a person who has been numb for years finally seeks help, the return of emotions can come as quite a shock”. ⁣ 🔹⁣ For many of us who have used drinking as a means of escape in order to cope, we aren’t ready for the surge of real-life emotions to come back. Heather explains when feelings knock at her door she either flings it wide open and let’s the feelings barge in, create chaos, and stomp all over her OR her other response is to shove a piano in front of the door and to suppress the unwanted feelings hoping they just go away. ⁣ 🔹⁣ A really healthy approach I’ve learned is to just simply OBSERVE. When the negative feelings knock, I open the door and stick my head out. Acknowledge what’s being felt. Be still. Notice what is happening in my mind and body. Now, this is where we can choose to express these feeling (cry, private tantrum, pray) or
